Academic preconditions
Course introduction
The course will train the students to deal with scientific models by identifying and applying the relevant mathematical methods from analysis, including mathematical symbolic language and logical arguments. In addition, the course will give the students introduction to basic concepts from linear algebra, with particular emphasis on matrix manipulations.
Expected learning outcome
Knowledge
The students should be able to:
- Explain differential and integral calculus, complex numbers and Taylor series, and matrix calculus, along with their applications.
Skills
The students should be able to:
- Formulate and, using mathematical symbolic language, carry out arguments related to mathematical problems within the syllabus of the course.
- Solve mathematical problems within the syllabus of the course.
- Apply methods and results from calculus to analyze and explain the behavior of the models presented during the course.
- Solve systems of linear equations, calculate determinants and find inverses of matrices.
Competences
The students should be able to:
- Analyze and explain theoretical and practical problems for applications to a suitable mathematical model; express mathematical reasoning both orally and in writing.
- Carry out analyses using mathematical methods and evaluate critically scientific theories and models.

The following main topics are contained in the course
- The concept of a function.
- Real and complex numbers.
- Systems of linear equations, matrix calculus, inverses of matrices, determinants.
- Differentiation and integration of functions of one or many variables.
- Taylor series.
- Differential equations.
- Vector calculus.

Examination aids
Written Exam:
The exam is with limited aids. Textbook, lecture notes and personal notes may be used. Any kind of calculator or CAS program is not allowed. Other aids are not allowed either.
Internet is not allowed. However, you may acess the course website in itslearning when opening the system "DE - Digital Eksamen". Notes from the course, that you wish to use as aids, must be downloaded to your computer at the latest the day before the exam. During the exam you are not allowed to use itslearning.

Port folio consists of written exam (January) and compulsory assignments (Autumn), where the written part counts 80% while compulsory assignments count 20%.
