Aim and purpose

The aim of the course is to provide the student with a practical understanding of how the different theories and concepts developed in the European Studies programme can be applied in a specific organisational or company environment. By working in this, the student can gain valuable experience with problem solving in companies, public and private institutions.

Content

Application of theories, concepts and models from the previous courses of the BSc European Studies programme on a specific problem related to the internship hosting company or institution.

The tasks taken on in the company or institution and the topic for the report for the examination must be approved by the deadline via a digital supervisor contract (exam condition). See also under “Form of instruction”.

Learning goals

The aim of the Internship period is that the student, based on the competences acquired in the study programme, demonstrates the ability to select, use and reflect on the usefulness of specific theories and analytical approaches to carry out the tasks that the student is assigned at the company/institution. The student must demonstrate skills in these areas with a weight that reflects the chosen academic perspective.

Specifically, the student must be able to, in a report:
  • Present the company/institution and the selected tasks / problem in a concise and clear manner, so an outsider obtains the necessary knowledge about the context
  • Structure and delineate the report in a way that it describes one or more clearly defined problems and explain both theoretical and practical considerations in connection to the selection of task(s) to be solved.
  • Select and apply theory and method for solving the selected problem(s)/performing the selected task(s). If necessary newly learned, additional theories and methods can be included.
  • Present possible problem solutions, including critically evaluate their scientific validity and practical relevance
  • Reflect on the project, with particular focus on congruence and / or discrepancy between theory and practice.

Literature

All the literature on the first and second year of the BSc European Studies programme and other for the Internship relevant material.

Teaching Method

6 hours are allocated to guidance including the supervisor's preparation for meetings as well as email and other correspondence.

The internship period gives the student an opportunity to learn how learned theory and method can be used to solve suitable problems. The tasks/problems to be solved, which must be agreed with a supervisor and the company/institution, may be in the form of one, large problem or several smaller problems. The student cannot receive a salary for carrying out these tasks. It is allowed to receive funding to cover documented expenses during the project- and trainee period. The student may have a job in the organization during the project- and trainee period.

The time set aside for the course corresponds to approximately 3,5 days a week for 13 weeks in the company/institution as well as time for the preparation and completion of the report. The distribution of this time must be described in the supervisor agreement that must include

  • A description of the problem to be solved and/or the tasks to be performed
  • A description of the agreed schedule for time in the company/institution, and
  • Information about who is the contact person and contact information for this person.

Link to the supervisor agreement is available under "Project- and Trainee Period" at study programme page on www.sdu.dk. When the supervisor agreement is completed, it will automatically go on to the relevant people for approval and registration.

The student may not receive payment for the project-oriented study, as a) the activity is an ECTS-bearing activity, and b) the student may receive SU during the study. Reimbursement for some expenses or a monthly payment for confirmed expenses can, however, be granted during the study. If repayment/reimbursement is received, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure, whether it is taxable or not.

Companies and institutions can give students in unprofitable project-oriented courses and on unpaid study stays an acknowledgment of up to DKK 3,000 a month.

Students who participate in project-oriented courses abroad may receive a salary if there is a legal requirement for minimum wages in the country in question.

Workload

Project work at the company/institution: 325 hours = about 44 working days if the internship takes place as fulltime stay.
Preparation of project report: 74 hours.
Guidance (participation and preparation): 6 hours.
A total of 405 hours.
