Recommended prerequisites

Basic knowledge of political theories.
Basic knowledge of parliamentary systems, the role of bureaucracy and organizational processes.

Aim and purpose

The objective of the course is to give the participants the skill to analyse political processes and policies in-depth, using theoretical skills. The students are supposed to learn substantial, critical analysis of policies and political processes. This will qualify them to better analyse and plan policies to achieve set objectives – both within political institutions and private enterprise.

- Methods and approaches to policy analysis - Concepts and theories - Multilevel analysis of policy - Content analysis of political issues and - Interdependence and linkages between political issues - Interdisciplinary aspects of policy analysis

Learning goals

Main attention is given to the political aspects of public regulations and the development of societies and regions. The course is consists of two types of activities. The first aims at to provide the participants with an approach for the understanding of the process of policy analysis and how issue areas are influenced by European and international integration and cooperation. The second part is dedicated to in class discussions based on home assignments, individual or group presentations by students. The overall aim of the course is to provide the students with analytical skills, develop these skills further and thereby enable them to analyse social phenomena with point of departure in theories and concepts of political science. More specific students must be able to: 
  • Apply the methods and tools of the discipline on a specific issue and to identify the relevant concepts
  • To critically evaluate which concepts and approaches are the most appropriate given the specific task
  • To structure the chosen subject and to present a comprehensive overview in an oral presentation
  • To provide a multi-structural and comprehensive presentation of topics in the field of comparative politics and governance
  • To analyse, compare and relate the issue to empirical examples as well as theoretical concepts
  • To provide a critical assessment of results and the approaches used
  • To demonstrate the ability to work with empirical and abstract concepts guided by a specific topic.

Teaching Method

To assure active learning the classwork is divided into traditional classroom lecturing, individual and group student projects, written and oral assignments applying the theoretical knowledge to practical cases.
