Basic knowledge and understanding of the legal and institutional framework of the EU, the role of law in the process of European integration.
Aim and purpose
European Competition Law deals with the area of law concerned with maintaining competition in private markets. It studies the law and economics of monopolies and cartels, including the potential benefits and harms of these market structures, and evaluates business conduct that may lead to monopoly and cartel outcomes, and the EU statutes, case law of the European Court of Justice and other policies that attempt to maintain competitive market structures and competitive conduct.
Content
Competition policy and the economic foundations. Introduction to the theory behind the law and the practices it encompasses. Vertical Agreements. A detailed look at the block exemption and the Commission"s Guidelines. Horizontal Agreements. The block exemptions and the Commission"s Guidelines are used as a starting point for a review of permissible forms of cooperation. Cartels. Abuse of a Dominant Position. Criminalization of competition law and the application of human rights. Mergers and Joint Ventures. The application of the merger regulation and the Commission"s assessment. Competition law and intellectual property rights. State Aid Public undertakings Public Procurement.
Learning goals
The objective of the course is to enable the students to: Present the main principles of the EU competition law Explain the rules by considering the underlying theory, the structure of the provisions and their application in practice Identify relevant problems of EU competition law Analyse questions related to EU competition law Present arguments for how to solve a problem related to EU competition law in a structured and coherent manner that demonstrates an overview of and insight into EU competition law and the underlying theories.

Teaching Method
Lectures, class-room discussions, student presentations, group projects. Students are expected to contribute actively in the class, e.g. in presenting and discussing various specific cases relating to EU Competition Law
