Aim and purpose

The purpose of this course is to acquire knowledge about concepts, theories and methods that can used for describing, analysing and solving complex managerial and marketing issues from an entrepreneurial point of view in a global business context. The students should acquire skills for applying relevant business economic theories and models for solving practice oriented tasks and problems, and furthermore the students should acquire competencies for identifying, analysing and reflecting upon and applying potential entrepreneurial oriented theories and solutions for organisations. 

The purpose of the course is to enable the students to understand and work with fundamental terms and theories in entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship from a business economic perspective. The course introduces the students to central business principles and topics related to the other subject areas of the study programme, such as marketing, organisation, finance and accounting issues. 

The course focuses on how to create new business opportunities in new and existing organisations, and provides various perspectives on business economic challenges. The course emphasises business economics change- and innovation processes.  

An additional purpose - as an introductory course to the b.sc merc programme – is to enhance fundamental skills of academic writing, techniques of making reports and projects, as well as IT-based academic information and literature research. The course plays a central role in terms of enhancing the students’ ability to identify own learning needs and study techniques for the university programme. 

Through a number real life business challenges throughout the course the students are encouraged to think and act entrepreneurially. The course contains a projects and activities such as writing workshops, business idea development exercises and Venture Cup start-up competitions.  

Specifically the course should provide the students with: 

•Knowledge of theories and practice about entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship, which takes place in new and existing ventures and organisations. This includes business practices and principles including basic introductory knowledge of economics and finance. 
•Skills for assessing and solving business economic issues applying the theoretical skills from the course. 
•Skills for drafting a problem formulation and draw up and compose an academic report.  
•Skills for IT based information- and literature research through search engines and scientific data bases. 
•Competencies for academic written communication through project report exercises. 

Content

The purpose of the course is reached through following topics and areas: 

•Fundamental concepts and theories about entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship taking place in new and existing organisations respectively. 
•Central business economic principles and paradoxes.
•Training and exercises in applying concepts and theories, as well as the ability to analyse, assess and critically evaluate business economic issues and challenges. 
•Introduction to economics, accounting and finance, including budgeting and financial assessment.
•IT-based academic information- and literature research, academic writing, search engines, and scientific database reasearch
•Academic writing, standards and techniques for making reports and projects
•Introduction for project work in teams.

Learning goals

In order to achieve the learning goals of the course, the students should be able to:

•Select relevant concepts, theories and models for projects and exercises within the course.
•Write and substantiate a well-articulated problem formulation using selected terms, theories and models.
•Describe and explain relevant terms, theories and models.
•Apply terms, theories and models for describing business opportunities and analyse their potential and implications in new and existing organisations.
•Critically assess strengths and weaknesses for concepts, theories and models in the course.
•Demonstrate IT proficiency, including IT based academic information- and literature research for making relevant analyses and presentations.

Make a report that complies with academic standards within the social sciences, including rules and regulations for scientific ethics and conduct.

Teaching Method

The course consists of a combination of lectures, cases, exercises, assignments, workshops, student projects, dialogue, discussions and questions. 

Digital tools such as e.g. peer grade, Poll-everywhere etc. are used for enhancing interaction and feedback to and among the students.

Central parts of the curriculum will be dealt and discussed in the lectures. It is crucial however that the students are well prepared and the course contains exercises and assignments that requires reading and preparation before class. The course focuses on combining theory and practice, and the writing workshops and Venture Cup activities plays a central role for interaction, progression, guidance and student oriented learning.

Workload

Scheduled classes:
Lectures: Two double learning-modules (two x two lessons) per week in 11 weeks in Odense. One quadruple learning-module (four lessons) per week in 11 weeks in Sønderborg.

Exercises: 5 scheduled workshop-days, each 6 lessons, including two Venture Cup-days. 

The scheduled activities consist of lectures, exercises, two Venture Cup project-days, and three scheduled, where the teams of students will work with academic writing, IT and information- and literature research and accounting and finance.

The multiple choice test (MCQ)based on the literature in the course. Assessment 7-point scale, weight 15% of the final course grade. The MCQ assesses the students’ knowledge and understanding of the terms, models and theories of the course.

The exam in Entrepreneurship and Business Understanding consist of a Part-assessment, weighing 15% of the final grade, as well as a Portfolio exam, that consist of a Venture Cup project, a team based written report and a subsequent team based oral examination. The Portfolio exam (Venture Cup, written report and oral examination) is assessed as a whole, and one common grade is given for this. The weight of this grade is 85%. All Portfolio activities are made in the exam team of 4-5 students.

Final Portfolio exam:
Written work 1: Venture Cup Idea Competition; creating a proposal for a new opportunity and business
The Venture Cup IdeaCompetition project is an exam activity in the course, where teams of students is to create a proposal for a new opportunity and business idea.
The project is made in teams of 4-5 students. The lecturer can determine potential deviations from the group size.
Duration: 2 scheduled workdays at SDU plus addition team based work for making the project. Deadline for handing in the Venture Cup project can be found in the Examination plan.
Place: 2 schedules workdays at SDU.
Computer with internet access is required. 
Length of projects: 3 pages.

Written work 2: Exam project; Written team based exam project
At the end of the course the students are to make a team based exam project (maximum 20 normal pages) within the areas of the course. The written report should contain a substantiated and well-articulated problem formulation using selected terms, theories and models. The report the students should select and apply relevant concepts, theories and models from the course for analysing and critical evaluation business oriented issues and suggest potential solutions. The report should comply with academic standards within the social sciences, yet taking into consideration that students are on the first semester of the programme.
The report should be made in teams of 4-5 students. The lecturer can determine potential deviations from the group size.
It must be evident from the table of content which of the team members that are responsible for the various parts of the exam project, so that an individual assessment is possible.
The exam report should comply with ”Formalities for written reports at SDU, Business Administration”. 

Duration: Deadline for handing in the exam project is announced through the Examination Plan.
Place: Take home assignment.
Computer with internet access is required.
Length of report: Maximum 20 normal pages.

Final oral exam:
The course ends with an oral team based exam. The oral exam takes departure in the written works as well as the literature and lectures of the course. The oral exam is 30 minutes in total pr team.

The Portfolio exam will be graded according to the Danish 7-point scale. The grade is one common overall grade including both the written and oral elements of the Portfolio. 

Information on re-exam in the course in the same exam-term:
The re-exam resembles the Portfolio part of the ordinary exam.
 Potential re-submission of an improved Venture Cup project and/or written Exam Project, or potentially making a brand new Venture Cup and/or written Exam Projec is decided by the lecturer of the course, and will be announced at the ordinary examination.
The re-exam will always include a final oral examination.

Used examination attempts in the former identical course will be transferred.
Courses that are identical with former courses that are passed according to applied rules cannot be retaken.

The student is automatically registered for the first examination attempt when the student is registered for a course or course element with which one or more examinations are associated. The course is passed, if and when the final grade is 2,0 at minimum. The grade cannot be achieved through rounding up. The grade ”-3” or ”U” may not be part of the grading from the Part-assessment or the Portfolio exam. If the course is passed, it is not possible to re-take a part-assessment with the grade 00.
