Recommended prerequisites

It is assumed that the students have the necessary knowledge in elementary economic theory equivalent to first year courses in micro- and macroeconomics. 

Aim and purpose

The course aims to widen students' knowledge of selected aspects of global economy.  

Content

The following topics will be covered: 
  • International trade theory 
  • Trade policy 
  • International trading system - GATT (WTO) 
  • Open-economy macroeconomics 
  • Factor mobility 
  • International monetary systems and exchange rate policies 
  • Global economic problems 

Learning goals

The course will enable the students to analyse a specific topic in the field of international economics from a theoretical as well as an empirical perspective, and to present the results in a written exam.

More specifically, the student must be able to: 
  • Structure a given problem and identify the key aspects. 
  • Provide a multi-structural and comprehensive presentation of the topic, and relate to text-book concepts. 
  • Analyze the issue, compare and relate to empirical examples. 
  • Present the results of the analysis and evaluate the methodological concerns.

Teaching Method

Activated learning:
Current events are included and discussed as supplement to the theoretical concepts where relevant, based on supplementary materials provide by students or instructor after mutual agreement. 

Workload

4 lectures per week for 15 weeks.

The total workload of the course is 1/3 of a semester workload (1640 hours /6 = approx 273 hours):

Contact hours: 60 hrs.
Preparation for lectures: 180 hrs.
Exam, including preparation and review of course: 93 hrs.

Registration for the course is automatically a registration for the ordinary examination of the course. Cancellation is not possible. If the student does not participate in the examination, the student will use an examination attempt.

Used examination attempts in the former identical course will be transferred.
Courses that are identical with former courses that are passed according to applied rules cannot be retaken.

The student is automatically registered for the first examination attempt when the student is registered for a course or course element with which one or more examinations are associated. Withdrawal of registration is not possible, and students who fail to participate in an examination have used one examination attempt, unless the University has made an exemption due to special circumstances.
