Content
This course is designed to make an introduction to composite materials, and to the manufacturing methods used to produce them.
Key areas:
- Fibers, including carbon fiber, fiberglass, and aramid (Kevlar)
- Fiber configurations such as unidirectional and woven fabrics
- Matrix, including thermoplastic and thermoset types
- Mechanical behavior
- Design and tooling considerations
- Manufacturing methods, including hand lay-up, prepreg layup, vacuum infusion, pultrusion, and filament winding
- Curing methods such as room temperature, oven, and autoclave cures
- Quality and defects

Teaching Method
The course is a combination of theory lectures, demonstrations, exercises, project work and visits to companies producing product from composite materials. Details will be available in the semester plan.
