Aim and purpose
A seminar in economics/mathematics-economics has several objectives. First and foremost it provides an opportunity for the student under guidance of a supervisor to practice how to design and provide analytical work on specific well delineated scientific problems. The main focus in a seminar must originate from one or more areas of economics/mathematics-economics presented in the compulsory courses of the profile/programme. The selected areas of economics/mathematics-economics needed to maintain this focus must be further elaborated by the inclusion of related and supplementary scientific literature compared to the syllabus for these compulsory courses. The selected problems can be both theoretical investigations and managerial problems and cases. If the chosen focus relates to a specific empirical context then the student may base the analysis using data.
Content
The student must independently, with counseling from a supervisor, study, analyze and disseminate a well-delineated scientific problem that lies within the focus area of the profile/programme. The seminar report may be in the form of an analysis of a specific topic, a literature review of related topics or an empirical study.
The student must suggest a topic and a preliminary project description using a digital form on the study web page. The preliminary study/project description must include concrete and specific ideas about the focus of the seminar, suggested methods to be used and relevant literature. It must also explicitly outline compulsory courses and the topics covered by these courses that are going to be used in the seminar. Based on this information, the profile responsible allocates a supervisor for the seminar.
The details of the academic approach are then decided by the student in collaboration with the supervisor. They must be provided on the digital form and approved by the supervisor and the profile manager before the given deadline (see under Examination conditions).
The individual project may be related to the topic of the student’s future master’s thesis, but the two topics must not be the same. Furthermore, the topic of the individual project must not be covered by the contents of the master’s thesis.
Learning goals
The purpose of the individual project is to train the student’s ability to tackle concrete, specified scientific problems within economics or mathematics. The student will acquire skills in analysing and discussing solutions to the chosen problem by use of economic/mathematical-economic methods and inclusion of relevant theories.
The student must, in a written seminar report, demonstrate skills in being able to:
Identify, select, formulate, structure and analyse a problem that is relevant for the competence profile/programme
Account for the relevance of the problem and identify the research questions
Search for, read, and apply scientifically based knowledge relevant for the selected problem.
Independently identify and choose a theoretical foundation, which either adds to or deepens the knowledge acquired in the constituent courses of the competence profile/programme.
Describe, explain and analyse important elements of the chosen theory and relate these to each other and to the specific problem.
Make a well-argued and reasoned choice of solution method(s) (in the case of a literature review, describe and motivate the method used to select and synthesize the literature included).
Reflect upon the implications of the choices made.
Formulate in writing a presentation of the problem area, analysis and findings in a scientific, clear and correct language.

A preliminary list of references should be included in the digital contract (see below). This includes primary literature (ie. not textbooks) not overlapping literature from previous or compulsory courses of the profile (maximum 20% overlap allowed).
Teaching Method
Ongoing during a semester. Autumn or Spring.
An amount of max. 3 hours pr. student is allocated for supervision including correspondence, meetings and the supervisor’s preparation for the meetings.

Supervision by appointment over the respective semester in which the student has registered (teaching registration via the Student Self Service)
Workload
The expected total workload is distributed as follows:
Writing of project: 135 hours, which includes supervision/contact to the supervisor.

Ordinary: The seminar must be handed in no later than Tuesday in week 51 at 12:00 (noon) (autumn semester) / Tuesday in week 21 at 12:00 (noon) (spring semester).
Reexam: The seminar must be handed in Tuesday week 8 at 12:00 (noon) (autumn semester) / Tuesday week 34 at 12:00 (noon) (spring semester).
Registration for the course is automatically a registration for the ordinary examination in the course. Cancellation is not possible. If the student does not participate in the examination, the student will use an examination attempt.
The university may grant an exemption from the rules in case of exceptional circumstances.
The student is responsible for registering for 2nd and 3rd examination attempt.

The assignment may be written in Danish or in English in agreement with the supervisor.
If the report is written by 2 students, it must be specified in the preface who is responsible for which parts of the seminar, so an individual evaluation is possible.
The seminar report must meet the Formalities for written assignments applying to programmes in economics and business administration available via the Exam webpage.
Reexam:
In case of reexam as a result of a non-passed report handed in for the ordinary exam, re-examination takes place on the basis of a revised report with the same topic (and the same company, for assignments involving collaboration with a company). In this case, a short supervision is granted in the form of an explanation major weaknesses in the original report.
The form for the re-exam can be changed by the study board. Such a change will be announced 14 days before the reexam takes place.
Regardless whether the report is handed in the first time for the ordinary exam or for the reexam, supervision takes place only in the time before the date stipulated for handing in for the ordinary exam.

The online supervisor agreement - https://blanket.sam.sdu.dk/form/837/submit
(course id. 9110232) must be approved by 15 September/15 February. If the agreement is not approved by this date, the student may not participate in ordinary exam and an examination attempt has been used.
Deviation from the deadline may be granted by the profile responsible provided there is a reasonable cause.
To be approved, the agreement must include a study/project including concrete and specific ideas about the focus of the seminar, suggested methods to be used, relevant literature and explicitly stated research questions must be given.
Fulfillment of the exam requirement is only possible prior to the ordinary exam. Participation in the re-examination thus requires that the exam requirement is met prior to the ordinary exam.

Used examination attempts in the former identical course will be transferred.
Courses that are identical with former courses that are passed according to applied rules cannot be retaken.
