Aim and purpose

In a globalised world, intercultural communication occurs in everyday life, in education, business, media, organisations, and institutions at national and international levels. Only an interculturally competent person can bridge the existing cultural and linguistic barriers. Therefore, the purpose of the course is to introduce the students to global cultural practices, and communication in business, workplaces, media, texts. Consequently, the students shall develop the analytical skills required when dealing with different types of communication (e. g. negotiations, teamwork, business communication, and presentations). Finally, reflection on intercultural encounters, intercultural learning, and intercultural competence is going to result in new perspectives for an intercultural professional life. 

Content

The teaching will focus on students gaining:
• Understanding of intercultural communication, intercultural learning, and intercultural competence.
• Knowledge of central theories on intercultural communication (e.g. functionalist, symbolic, and social constructionist approaches).
• Knowledge and awareness of the role of cultures, languages, and identities in an intercultural encounter including verbal as well as non-verbal communication.
• Proficiency in English and English technical terms in relation to theory and intercultural communication.

Learning goals

The teaching will focus on students gaining: 
  • Understanding of intercultural communication, intercultural learning, and intercultural competence. 
  • Knowledge of central theories on intercultural communication (e.g. functionalist, symbolic, and social constructionist approaches). 
  • Knowledge and awareness of the role of cultures, languages, and identities in an intercultural encounter including verbal as well as  non-verbal communication.

Teaching Method

There are 2 lessons per week for 15 weeks.

To enable the students to achieve the learning outcomes of the course, the teaching is organised in the following way: 

  • Lectures, class-room discussions, practical exercises in groups, and student presentations.

Courses that are identical with former courses that are passed according to applied rules cannot be retaken.

The student is automatically registered for the first examination attempt when the student is registered for a course or course element with which one or more examinations are associated. Withdrawal of registration is not possible, and students who fail to participate in an examination have used one examination attempt, unless the University has made an exemption due to special circumstances. 
If a student does not meet the established university prerequisites for taking the exam, he or she has used one examination attempt, unless the University has made an exemption due to special circumstances.

NOTE - The number of students enrolled may be restricted by the Study Board.
