Aim and purpose
The aim of the internship is to provide the students with the opportunity to incorporate practical, political and/or legal issues in the international context of the graduate study programme and thereby test the qualifications obtained.
Content
The internship includes a minimum of 248 hours (corresponding to 2 months full time) study programme-related work with a public authority, a NGO, a private company or company or other organisations, which perform relevant work in the field of international security and law. The internship can either be project oriented, or the trainee (student) can take a position which is part of the internship organisation’s daily operations. The main part of the work must be academically relevant assignments in which the student can apply knowledge obtained during the study programme and, together with the organisation, handle one or more specific issues and daily tasks related to the student’s academic field. The precise organization and content of the work must be described in a written contract signed by the student and the employer (internship agreement). This contract must be endorsed by a full-time faculty member (assistant, associate or full professor) of the Department of Political Science and Public Management or of the Department of Law who agrees to act as the scientific advisor and the evaluator on the final report (supervision agreement). The contract must describe how the student ensures that he or she does not fall behind in the study programme progress. This could be done by earning 20 ECTS extra in the semester prior to the internship, or by enrolling in courses worth 20 ECTS in the same semester as the internship, or by a combination of the two. The study programme is organised in order to make it possible to obtain 30ECTS by attending 2-3 courses in addition to the internship (e.g. summer school, blended learning courses, seminar course etc.). It is also an option that the student makes an agreement with the internship organisation to follow a course in parallel with the internship.
Learning goals
The internship should be suited to reflect the scientific advancement of the student and test the knowledge acquired during the study programme, and by the end of the internship experience, the student will be able to:
-Obtain practical experience with international political and/or legal issues and gain knowledge about the administrative procedures and functions of a public authority, a NGO, a private company or another organisation
-Handle and solve issues within the relevant academic fields in practice
Account for assignments during the internship and link those tasks to knowledge gained from the taught courses
-Place the experiences in an academically relevant perspective, for example, through references to theoretical, methodological or other academic literature within international security and/or law
-Carry out a theoretical or other academic discussions about specific aspects of the practical experiences from the internship organization
-Discuss his/her perspective and practical experiences in a written assignment which as a minimum contains a research question, discussion/analysis and conclusion, and which meets the demands of an academic assignment.
Literature
Depends on the subject and is selected by the student according to the experiences gained during the internship.
Teaching Method
Usually, the student is referred to the contact person in the organisation of the internship for regular supervision and the content of the written report, whereas the course teacher from the study programme will supervise preliminary and concluding work on, for example, the format of and theoretical considerations of the report. The course teacher assesses the report, but the responsibility of the content itself - and of other products that the student may have produced during the internship - is with the student and the internship organisation.
The intern agreement and the supervision agreement is submitted for approval by the Head of Studies no later than September 1 (fall semesters) or February 1 (spring semesters). If the agreements are not submitted at this point or if it cannot be approved, the student must de-register from the work placement and register for other courses counting the same ECTS points within the first two weeks of the semester.
There is a maximum of 2 hours of supervision from the faculty supervisor (preparation is not included).
The internship ends with a written report in which the student must account for the work carried out during the internship, relate the experiences obtained to issues within international security and/or law, and reflect on his/her scientific development.

Length
Written report of max. 8 pages of 2,400 characters (spacing, appendix and notes included, but table of content and bibliography excluded), to be handed in via Blackboard and assessed by the course teacher who endorsed the internship. The report must reflect how the student applied the knowledge obtained during the study programme to the practical training carried out with the internship. The Academic Study Board of Political Science, furthermore, conclusively approves the 10 ECTS on the basis of the report. If the report is not approved, a new report can be handed in according to agreement with the examiner which does not require choosing a new subject.

Due work prior to admission to the programme will not qualify as an internship.
The student may not receive payment for the project-oriented study, as a) the activity is an ECTS-bearing activity, and b) the student may receive SU during the study. Reimbursement for some expenses or a monthly payment for confirmed expenses can however be granted during the study. If repayment/reimbursement is received, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure, whether it is taxable or not.
Registration for the course is automatically a registration for the ordinary examination in the course. Cancellation is not possible. If the student does not participate in the examination, the student will use an examination attempt.
The university may grant an exemption from the rules in case of exceptional circumstances.
