Recommended prerequisites

The student is expected to work independently with a subject of own choice in the field of international security and law. The student is expected to allocate sufficient time to work on the project in a systematic and well-planned manner. 

Aim and purpose

The Elective Assignment gives the student the opportunity to work independently and in-depth with a topic of special interest and to develop competences of academic writing and research. The purpose of the Elective Assignment is to strengthen the student’s independent research skills, analytic and methodological competences, writing skills and capacity to communicate academic arguments and findings in a professional manner. 

Content

The topic of the Elective Assignment must be defined together with a supervisor chosen by the student and within the subject area of international security and law as defined within the curriculum of the Master of International Security and Law. The topic must be identified within at least one of the disciplines of international relations and international law.

Learning goals

- The student demonstrates competences to independently formulate a research problem. 
- The student demonstrates knowledge of research methods as well as various theories and/or approaches relevant for the research problem.
- The student demonstrates competences to assess the analytical relevance and explanatory power of research methods, theories and approaches. 
- The student demonstrates skills in collecting and analyzing data that is relevant for the research problem, as well as in communicating the research methods and research findings.
- The student demonstrates competences to critically assess the limits of his/her own work. 

Literature

To be chosen on basis of the theme of the Elective Assignment and of the research problem. Estimated amount: 600 pages.

Teaching Method

The Elective Assignment is supervised by a faculty member. The student has to contact a possible supervisor among the full time employed researchers (assistant, associate or full professors) of the Centre for War Studies. A written supervision contract has to be submitted via an electronic form no later than September 1st (fall semester) and February 1st (spring semester). If no supervision contract is submitted upon deadline, the Head of Studies will appoint a supervisor.

The Elective Assignment is an option open to all students and it is completed during the 2nd or the 3rd semester in parallel to regular courses. Registration takes place in the same manner and at the same time as registration for the other courses.

Examination conditions:

Supervision contract must be submitted by September 1 (fall semesters) or February 1 (spring semesters). If a contract is not handed in before the deadline, the Head of Studies will appoint a supervisor.

Elective assignments written in spring semesters 2018must be handed in in the end of June. Re-examination in the end of August. Third hand-in will be in the beginning of January in the following exam-period.

Elective assignments written in fall semesters 2018 must be handed in in the beginning of January. Re-examination in the end of February. Third hand-in will be in the beginning of June in the following exam-period. 

Exact dates appear in the examination plan. 

Registration for the course is automatically a registration for the ordinary examination in the course. Cancellation is not possible. If the student does not participate in the examination, the student will use an examination attempt. 
The university may grant an exemption from the rules in case of exceptional circumstances.
