Recommended prerequisites

A prior knowledge of Operations and Supply Chain Management corresponding to bachelor level in business economics is highly advisable.

The course involves the use of basic concepts in Probability and Statistics: probability density, cumulative density functions, quantiles, Normal distribution; Calculus: derivatives, integration, first order condition of nonlinear optimization programs. Familiarity with MS Excel is highly advisable.

Aim and purpose

The purpose of the course is to give the student knowledge of problems, models and solution methods within the basic areas of production and inventory management in the context of the full supply chain.

Content

Main topics covered in the course are as follows:

  • Frameworks for production and inventory planning and management.
  • Deterministic and stochastic inventory management.
  • Coordinated inventory management in a supply chain.
  • Multiple-item inventory, production and procurement problems.
  • Periodic and continuous review of inventories.
  • Inventories with perishable items.
  • Aggregate production and workforce planning.
  • Top-down vs. bottom-up planning.
  • Material requirements planning: MRP and extensions.
  • Short-term production scheduling problems.

Learning goals

After having participated in the course, the student should be able to:

  • Identify the main problems in production and inventory planning.
  • Describe models and methods in production and inventory planning, verbally as well as mathematically.
  • Discuss the assumptions and limitations of models and methods in production and inventory planning.
  • Relate theoretical models of inventory and production to real life problems.
  • Apply models and methods of production and inventory planning to specific problems.
  • Discuss the potential applicability of models and methods of production and inventory to specific problems.

Teaching Method

Lectures that present, discuss, and analyze a range of important issues that are related to production and inventory planning in the context of the full supply chain. Lectures are accompanied by Excel applications It is important for a successful learning process that the students prior to each lecture have studied the text specified in the syllabus. Compulsory coursework is part of the course, and to hand in a successful report requires that the student is able to use preselected subsets of the presented tools and theory to solve specific analytical problems.

4 hours of lectures weekly during 11 weeks.

Courses that are identical with former courses that are passed according to applied rules cannot be retaken.

Supplemental information on final grading in the course:
From the grades for the two exam parts, a final course grade is computed as follows:

If both grades for parts 1 and 2 are -3, the final course grade is -3
If the grade for part 1 is -3, the final course grade is -3
If the grade for part 2 is -3, the final course grade is -3
If both grades for parts 1 and 2 are higher than -3, the final course grade is computed as a weighted average with a weight of 30% on the grade for part 1 and a weight of 70% on the grade for part 2. The average is rounded to the nearest grade, with the exception that the grade 02 cannot be given by rounding up the average.

When a student has obtained a grade of 02 or higher for one part of the evaluation, this part cannot be re-sat. The final course grade is based on the highest obtained grade for Part 1 (the written report) and the most recent obtained grade for part two (the oral exam). The exam tests the fulfilment of all learning goals.

The student is automatically registered for the first examination attempt when the student is registered for a course or course element with which one or more examinations are associated.
