Aim and purpose

The teaching will focus on the key learning objectives listed below. See Learning Goals.

This is supported by the selected exam form, which promotes and examines the students' knowledge, skills and competencies in the below points.

Content

The aim of the course is to provide students with a profound knowledge about the human side of organizations. The point of departure is the employees and their competences, seen as a strategic resource, for companies as well as organizations, both in relation to recruitment, development, and retention of staff. This knowledge should equip students to reflect on the various approaches to the management of the human resources, and to assess the opportunities and limitations tied to the different ways of managing.

The subject is a natural supplement to the students’ understanding of general management, cross-cultural differences in views about people and human relations, and of their own reflections regarding job suitability and career. It comprises the following elements among others:
1. The history of HRM, its context and challenges
2. HR as a strategic parameter, contributing to firm performance
3. Critical reflections on ethical behaviour and sustainability
4. Manning an organisation, including issues such as managing diversity
5. Learning and development
6. Management of performance and reward
7. Workplace relations
8. HRM in an international context (comparative HRM)
9. HRM in multinational enterprises (international HRM)
10 .HRM in other contexts (SMEs and the not-for-profit sector)
11. New trends and developments

Learning goals

Knowledge
• Students are expected to be able to demonstrate knowledge in the form of good command and application of the central concepts, processes, models and theories of Human Resource Management presented in the course.

Skills
• Students are expected to demonstrate skills in identifying adequate solutions to human resource management problems, for example with regard to the strategic impact of HRM, and to critique, appraise and otherwise reflect upon the impacts of such solutions.

Competences
Students
• can analyze specific problems based on selected concepts, models and frameworks
• can concisely present complex issues to others through the use of text and oral means
• can develop a sustainable HR strategy that is targeted towards achievement of organizational goals.
• can (critically) reflect on the knowledge produced with this field

Teaching takes the form of lectures, case studies, exercises, and student presentations about specific HRM themes. In order to apply theoretical knowledge to practice, several case studies and exercises are prepared and practical work with the case studies is carried out in student groups in the classroom with the following discussion of the case with the lecturer.

Literature

The syllabus comprises about 1.000 pages.

Teaching Method

A variety of activities will be implemented, such as for example: lecture hours, student group work, presentation of group work.

The teaching is planned and performed in a way that supports active learning and activating teaching. Different types of activity are implemented.
At the beginning of the course the teacher informs the students of the plan for the study activities.

Teaching can be supported by various activities. Some examples are guest talks given by the invited HR practitioners; group work on case studies carried out by the groups of students in the classroom and the following discussions of the cases with the lecturer.
