Aim and purpose
Case research is a frequently applied research method in Political Science and Public Management. The purpose of this course is to introduce the students to the details of case research in order to enable them to assess the case research of others and to conduct case research themselves.

Learning goals
To meet the goal of the course, students at the end of the course should be able to
•Describe what is case research and distinguish different types of cases.
•Contrast different case research designs.
•Compare options how to collect data for case research.
•Distinguish between approaches to analyze data for case research.
•Apply the case research method.
•Assess the fit between a research question and the case research method.
Literature
The course will use the following textbook:
McNabb, D. E. (2010). Case research in public management. ME Sharpe.
In addition, 1-3 further readings will be assigned for most lectures. Students are expected to read these materials prior to the class. The readings will accumulate to approximately 1200 pages.
Teaching Method
30 lecture hours in 15 weeks.
The students are expected to take active part in the lectures and exercises.
The course will be a combination of lectures given by the lecturer, exercises and group discussions, presentations given by students, and other more interactive forms of lectures.
Workload
The course will take place in 15 times 2 hours in the fall semester.
This course grants 10 ECTS. As per university regulations, a 10 ECTS course entails a workload of 270 hours. The following time distribution is an estimate for the average student:
