Mandatory prerequisites

Aim and purpose

The purpose of the seminar is to train the student’s ability to independently research a topic and to effectively present the findings in writing as well as orally. It also trains the student’s ability to discuss others’ work critically and professionally.

Content

The student writes a paper in a topic of own choice within microeconomics (broadly defined). Each paper will be presented at a seminar, where an opponent will be assigned.

Examples of possible topic areas:

•Health Economics

•Industrial Organization

•Decision theory

•Game Theory

•Welfare Economics

•Urban Economics (transport, housing, location of households and firms)

•Development Economics (micro aspects)

•The seminar paper can be theoretical or empirical/applied.

The topic of the seminar paper may be related to the topic of the student’s future master’s thesis, but the problems addressed should not be the same. Overlap should be declared.
Participation in information meeting (beginning of September) and the joint seminar meetings (end of November and beginning of December) is mandatory. Note that students that do not show up at the information meeting without any prior alternative arrangement with the supervisor will automatically lose their place at the seminar.

Learning goals

Students are expected to produce a written paper in microeconomics in which they demonstrate abilities to:

•Identify, motivate and structure a relevant problem.

•Search for and review relevant literature (articles, reports, etc.).
•Describe, explain, and analyse important elements of the chosen theory and relate/apply these to the specific problem.

•Reflect upon the implications of the choices made.

•Write in a clear and effective style.
When presenting their paper the students are expected to demonstrate abilities to:

•Make a well-structured and clear presentation of their work.

•Discuss their work with other seminar participants.
When discussing others’ seminar papers the students are expected to demonstrate abilities to:

•Critically read and assess the work.

•Contribute to a fair, balanced, and enlightening discussion of the work in a friendly and professional atmosphere.
