Content
The student writes a paper in a topic of own choice within microeconomics (broadly defined). Each paper will be presented at a seminar, where an opponent will be assigned.
Examples of possible topic areas:
•Health Economics
•Industrial Organization
•Decision theory
•Game Theory
•Welfare Economics
•Urban Economics (transport, housing, location of households and firms)
•Development Economics (micro aspects)
•The seminar paper can be theoretical or empirical/applied.
The topic of the seminar paper may be related to the topic of the student’s future master’s thesis, but the problems addressed should not be the same. Overlap should be declared.
Participation in information meeting (beginning of September) and the joint seminar meetings (end of November and beginning of December) is mandatory. Note that students that do not show up at the information meeting without any prior alternative arrangement with the supervisor will automatically lose their place at the seminar.
Learning goals
Students are expected to produce a written paper in microeconomics in which they demonstrate abilities to:
•Identify, motivate and structure a relevant problem.
•Search for and review relevant literature (articles, reports, etc.).
•Describe, explain, and analyse important elements of the chosen theory and relate/apply these to the specific problem.
•Reflect upon the implications of the choices made.
•Write in a clear and effective style.
When presenting their paper the students are expected to demonstrate abilities to:
•Make a well-structured and clear presentation of their work.
•Discuss their work with other seminar participants.
When discussing others’ seminar papers the students are expected to demonstrate abilities to:
•Critically read and assess the work.
•Contribute to a fair, balanced, and enlightening discussion of the work in a friendly and professional atmosphere.

The course will not be offered if less than 8 students register.

The course has an estimated work-load of 270 hours, distributed as follows:
Lectures/Meetings/seminars: 27 hours
Work on own seminar paper: 162 hours
Presentation preparations: 27 hours
Reading seminar papers and preparation of discussions: 54 hours.

Beginning of September: A joint information meeting will take place in the beginning of the semester.
Here, the supervisor will inform about the seminar and the participants will set the dates and times for the seminars in the end of November and in the beginning of December with presentations and discussions of papers (see below).
Moreover, the supervisor will present a list of possible topics/research problems for seminar papers.
Mid September:
First meeting with supervisor.
October 1st: A 1-page outline of the paper should be handed in.
Mid October:
Second meeting with supervisor.
November the 15th: Deadline for handing in the seminar paper.
End of November and the beginning of December: Presentation and discussion of papers.
The detailed plan for presentations and assignment of discussants to papers, format of seminars, etc. will be provided by the supervisor.
Registration for the course is automatically a registration for the ordinary examination in the course. Cancellation is not possible. If the student does not participate in the examination, the student will use an examination attempt.
The university may grant an exemption from the rules in case of exceptional circumstances.
Evaluation at the re-exam can be changed.
Form of examination for the certificate:
Assignment.
Presentation.
Discussion (opponent).
Active participation.
1 grade is given.

Grade composition:
The seminar paper: 60%
Presentation of own paper: 10%
Discussion of other paper as opponent: 20%
Active participation: 10%
The assignment must be written in English.
It is possible to write in groups of two. In this case, the allowed number of pages double, and there will be two opponents. Grades are individual.

At renewed examination attempt a new assignment must be written. This assignment may be written within the same subject field as the previous assignment.
