Recommended prerequisites

Students taking the course should have already taken the course Microeconometrics. In addition, they should be familiar with statistical/econometrics software such as Stata or R.

Aim and purpose

Most estimation methods rely on untestable assumptions in order to yield causal estimates. How can then researchers check the plausibility of these assumptions and convince their audience that their estimates do indeed represent causal effects? This course will aim to provide answers to this question, focusing on the most commonly used estimation methods in applied microeconomics. In addition, students will also learn how to decide which estimation method is most appropriate to use in a particular situation, as well as the most common challenges to the identification of causal effects. At the end of the course, students should be able to design an empirical approach (i.e., choose an estimation method, provide evidence for the plausibility of its assumptions, estimate the model) when given a research question. This is a very valuable skill that will allow them to perform at a high level in a wide range of jobs, both in the public and in the private sector.

Content

The topics covered in the course include, time permitting:

•Fixed effects and difference-in-differences

•Instrumental variables

•Regression discontinuity

•Synthetic control

•Matching

Learning goals

To fulfil the purposes of the course the student must be able to:

Description of outcome - Knowledge

Demonstrate knowledge about the course’s focus areas enabling the student to:

•Describe and explain the assumptions needed for a causal interpretation of different methods.

•Describe and explain how to check for the plausibility of these assumptions.

Description of outcome - Skills

Demonstrate skills, such that the student is able to:

•Apply estimation methods to a given research question and data set using econometrics software.

•Determine the plausibility of the assumptions required for the estimation of causal effects.

•Interpret the estimation results.

•Identify potential challenges to the assumptions underlying the estimation method.

Description of outcome - Competences

Demonstrate competences, such that the student is able to:

•Decide on the most appropriate method to use to answer a particular research question.

•Critically assess empirical studies.

Literature

The course mainly relies on articles, the list of which will be provided during the semester.

Additional information

Part 1: Individual in-class assignment (September-December).
The in-class assignment consists of the presentation of a published research paper using one of the methods covered in the course. A list of eligible papers will be provided at the beginning of the course and the allocation of papers to students will also be made at the beginning of the course

Calculation of grade:
From the grades of parts 2 and 3 a final course grade is computed as follows: If one or both grades of part 2 and part 3 are -3, the final course grade is -3. When both grades of part 2 and part 3 are different from -3, the final course grade is computed as a weighted average with a weight of 40% on the grade of part 2 and a weight of 60% on the grade of part 3. The average is rounded to the nearest grade with the exception that the grade 02 cannot be given by rounding up the average.
When a student has obtained a grade of 02 or higher for one part of the evaluation, this part cannot be reevaluated. The final course grade is based on the most recently obtained grades for the two parts. When a student has obtained a final course grade of 02 or higher, none of the two parts can be reevaluated.
