Mandatory prerequisites

Passed the 1st year exam prior to starting the Project- and Trainee Period.

Recommended prerequisites

Knowledge, skills and competences from the disciplines that are on the program 1.- 4. semester.

Aim and purpose

The aim of the project- and trainee period is that students, by performing specific tasks in a company, get a chance to test the competences acquired at the first four semesters. In addition the aim is that the student gets a chance to reflect on the possibilities and limitations of these competences in relation to application to practice as well as the need to acquire additional knowledge in relation to concrete problem-solving . Finally, the aim is for students to obtain experience with the professional, social as well as ethical competences required when working in a company. The project and trainee period thus helps to prepare the student for the practice context that the student must act in after obtaining the degree.

Content

The content of the course is that the student;

  • In agreement with a supervisor and in cooperation with a company solves one or more specific tasks or problems that can be solved by using knowledge and methodological skills that the student has acquired during his or her study as well as potentially newly acquired theory and method.
  • Produce a project report in which the student, on the basis of one or more of the tasks, from a specific subject or methodological perspective, explains the chosen method for solving the problem and theories used, discuss alternative methods, and make a critical reflection of the process in relation to relevant methods and theories learned in the study programme and the possible need to draw on additional theory and method.

Before an agreement with the company is made, the student must, to the line responsible professor, account for the expected tasks and their relevance in the context of the subject areas in the study programme. If the line responsible can approve of the relevance of the tasks, the student is assigned a supervisor by the relevant department. To this end, the student must fill in a digital form to which there is a link on the study web page.

The tasks must be finally approved by the deadline via a digital supervisor contract (exam condition). See also under “Teaching method”.

Learning goals

The aim of the project- and trainee period is that the student, on the basis of the competences acquired in the study programme, demonstrates the ability to select, use and reflect on the usefulness of specific theories and analytical approaches to carry out the tasks that the student is assigned at the company. The student must demonstrate skills in these areas with a weight that reflects the chosen academic perspective.
Specifically, the student must be able to:

Description of outcome - Knowledge

• Present the company and the selected tasks / problem in a concise and clear manner, so an outsider obtains the necessary knowledge about the context
• Select, explain and show an understanding of theories, methods and practices relevant to the chosen problem, be it knowledge that was previously acquired in the study program as well as additional updated knowledge within the subject areas of relevance to the business context Description of outcome

Description of outcome - Skills

• Structure and delineate the report in a way that it describes one or more clearly defined problems and explain both theoretical and practical considerations in connection to the selection of task(s) to be solved
• Select and apply theory and method for solving the selected problem(s)/performing the selected task(s). If necessary newly learned, additional theories and methods must be employed.

Description of outcome - Competences

• Present possible problem solutions, including critically evaluate their scientific validity and practical relevance.
• Reflect on the project, with particular focus on congruence and / or discrepancy between theory and practice.

Literature

The student is expected to work on problem solving and reporting primarily drawing on the literature that has been used in the courses included in the program. In addition, it may be relevant to build additional knowledge and skills in the project. The extent of references to literature and the need to supplement the study curriculum with additional literature depends on the specific task(s).

Teaching Method

The project- and trainee period gives the student an opportunity to learn how learned theory and method can be used to solve suitable problems. The tasks/problems to be solved, which must be agreed with a supervisor and the company, may be in the form of one, large problem or several smaller problems. The student cannot received a salary for carrying out these tasks. It is allowed to receive funding to cover documented expenses during the project- and trainee period. The student may have a job in the organization during the project- and trainee period.

The time set aside for the course corresponds to approximately 2 days a week for 13 weeks in the company as well as time for the preparation and completion of the report. This must be described in the supervisor agreement that must include a description of the problem to be solved and/or the tasks to be performed, a description of the agreed schedule for time in the company, and  information about who is the contact person and contact information for this person.

Link to the supervisor contract is available under "Project- and Trainee Period" at study programme page on www.sdu.dk. When the supervisor agreement is completed, it will automatically go on to the relevant people for approval and registration.
