Aim and purpose

Project Management is an important task in political and non-political organizations at many levels. Especially at EU level, projects play an important part in the implementation of policies. At the end of the bachelor program, this course will base on the students’ acquired knowledge and introduce them to basic methods of project management, parallel to (and synergic with) their elaboration of their bachelor project.

Content

The students will be introduced to the following topics: 
•Project management: Concept of a "project", project management tasks, mechanism of coordination and degree of organisation. 
•Project Environment and Stakeholder: Projects and their environment, Analysis of the Project Environment: Stakeholder Analysis, project marketing (project promotion, media und public relational work), Control of the Project Environment. 
•Project Targets: SMART, Project Targets, Target Characteristics, Development of Target Hierarchies. Project Success and Failure Criteria: Project Success and Attainment of Project Targets, General Criteria of Project Success with Regard to the Project Targets, Success Criteria of the Stakeholders, Logical Framework Approach. 
•Project Phases and Life Cycle: Phase Model and Milestone Planning. 
•Social Competence: Communication, Motivation, Social Structures, Groups and Teams, Self-Management, Leadership, Conflict Management, Special Communication Situations, Intercultural Teams, Intercultural Communication (Chairing of Meetings, Chairing and Structuring of a Project Group Meeting, Chairing of a Workshop, Holding Negotiations, Project Presentation). 
•Method Competence: Work Breakdown, Activity Sequencing and Schedule Management, Resource Management, Cost Management, Financial Resource Management, Performance Assessment and Project Progress, Software application 
•Risk Analysis, Risk Management,

Description of outcome - Knowledge

Students will obtain both theoretical and practical knowledge on project management. They will become familiar with the special PM vocabulary, basic leadership and organizational theory and project-oriented thinking. Students learn the theoretical background of the project management instruments. They will become familiar with project management instruments as stakeholder analysis, risk analysis, performance measurement, relevant information and reporting procedures, milestones- and project plans.  

Description of outcome - Skills

The course enables the students to use project working methods and instruments. They will learn to structure their work, develop their leadership and communication skills and their ability to work in teams. Students learn methods that are used by project managers in companies, as well as in (European) institutions. They learn to work with software tools used for project management. Students will be able to apply methods such as stakeholder analysis, performance measurement, risk analysis, and different types of project organisations, relevant information & reporting procedures, handling of a milestone analysis and so on. Students will be then able to classify these instruments and methods in a systematic project context. 

Description of outcome - Competences

Students will acquire leadership, organizational and communication skills. During the course students are learning to handle by themselves the problems that are typical for the project teams e.g. time pressures, task assignments, (intercultural) communication problems.

Teaching Method

Method is a combination of classroom lectures, role simulations, face-to-face and virtual group work and presentations.
Besides classroom teaching, the students will work on different individual and group projects during the course. The final project, which has to be prepared for and defended in the exam, will be elaborated during the second half of the semester. Here, the students will be divided by the instructor into groups of 4-5, depending on their cultural background and working styles to assure diverse groups.
Students will have different tasks to do during the project, both individually and in groups. There will be face-to-face as well as virtual supervision and feedback by the instructor. During the exam project elaboration phase, there will be regular supervision by the instructor.

The groups work mentioned below is part of the ordinary exam in june. Reexam in August. 

Registration for the course is automatically a registration for the ordinary examination of the course. Cancellation is not possible. If the student does not participate in the examination, the student will use an examination attempt. 
The university may grant an exemption from the rules in case of exceptional circumstances.

Please note that the type and form of the re-examination may differ from that of the ordinary examination, , e.g. from written to oral examination.

Additional information

The portfolio consists of the following:

Individual presentation and defence of a group project. Opposition to another group project, both oral and by an evaluation report on the opposed project (5-7 pp.), written individually.

Evaluation 50% group project, 20% individual defence of group project, 30% individual opposition to another group project.


Students have to hand in a group project report on paper, including project objectives, stakeholder analysis, risk analysis and a detailed project/milestone plan. Papers are distributed to the opponent group. About 3-4 weeks later, the opposition and defense will take place as such:
Each group gets 10 min. to present their project to the opponents (members of another group)
Individually, the opponents discuss parts of the project presentation
Individually, the presenters defend the opponents’ criticism
All in all, 90 min. are allotted to the defense/opposition of each project

Courses that are identical with former courses that are passed according to applied rules cannot be retaken.

The student is automatically registered for the first examination attempt when the student is registered for a course or course element with which one or more examinations are associated. Withdrawal of registration is not possible, and students who fail to participate in an examination have used one examination attempt, unless the University has made an exemption due to special circumstances. 

NOTE - The number of students enrolled may be restricted by the Study Board. If the enrolment limit is exceeded preference is granted to full degree students following a compulsory course on a SDU programme.
